Shipping Container for storage

Need to store furniture etc for up to 18 months whilst we rent a small place before moving again.
Looking at buying a 20 foot shipping container for about £1750 delivered, then flog it for £1k once finished with it. Seems a better financial bet than storage long term. eg Big Yellow storage
Anyone used a shipping container like this?

No, but many storage companies use them.
Using containers doesn't have the best of feedbacks if they are kept outside. They're apparently fine for things that don't deteriorate from damp but I'd be concerned about storing anything which might be more susceptible to damp in one.
It could end up not being such a good deal & costing you more in the long run.
I'm not sure how you'd stand with insurance but maybe someone here will know.
No chance of renting unfurnished & using your own stuff for the 18 months?0 -
hi, does anyone know if you need planning permission to put a 20ft container on a driveway, i have a small extension on the house and it is cluttered with bikes and some of my brothers non perishable belongings, i have enough room for the container and then parking for my car im in the merseyside area and dont know if this would vary from area to area,0

We have a 12 foot container that we use to store spare building equipment in. We have rubber seals on the doors so it doesn't get damp.
The only trouble with them is if they can be seen people assume you have something in worth stealing. On our site we rented a 20 foot container. It had its locks burnt off and was then emptied. We have the other well away from the road.
We have a friend that rents containers out in his yard as well as renting them out to sites.0
