Refund without buyer's permission

Help?
I bought my wife a watch from Asos in feb 2012. One month later and the pin holding the strap snapped. So I contacted Asos and they said return the watch and will assess it then get back to you with a fix.
I was therefore expecting an email to discuss the options available, instead they just refunded the cost of the watch. Issue or me is that I bought the watch when it was half price and this is no longer available
Question
Can Asos give me a refund without my permission, surely I own the watch and they need my say so to make the refund. It was only the strap pin and this must be fixable. They will not send the watch back to me.
Did they have a right to do this???
Thanks

When you returned the watch, what did you write inside the parcel?
Whenever I've returned things to Asos I've had to put a tick in the box/ choose a code type thing to indicate whether I want a refund or exchange. It could be that you have been given a refund automatically on returning the watch if your preferences were not clear.
Do they still sell the exact same watch? If they do then just phone them up, or send them an email explaining that there has been a mistake and that you wanted a replacement rather than a refund. Asos have always been fair to me regarding exchanging sale priced goods for a different size even after the sale is over and the price is higher, so I can only assume they have made a mistake here.
ETA: when you say that "this is no longer available", do you mean the watch or the sale price?
It's only a game

Thanks for the reply. Watch is no longer for sale at Asos and although available in other shops is twice the price I paid.
My frustration with Asos is that I made initial contact with them on email to explain the issue with the watch. I was asking for it to be fixed. On their reply, they said send it back to us and will contact you upon receipt with their assessment. Was expecting them to have the decency to make contact with me to discuss refund / repair.
