Good quality cognac - please help me choose...

Hi everyone, not sure if I am posting in the right place so sorry if I am not!
Hubby turns 40 soon and I want to get him a decent cognac as he's always mentioned wanting to try some. He's no expert but I know he's interested.
I am wanting it to be a memorable gift, I have a few other things bought just in case my cognac selection is awful...
Having done lots of research about the cognacs, I reckon the decision is now between:
Remy Martin XO Excellence - around £97 online best delivered price
or
Hine Rare VSOP - around £39 best delivered price
I know they are two types, but Hine seems to be well regarded as almost as good as an XO. And given my hubby hasn't tried much cognac, I don't want to make the wrong decision either way! I figure as a 40th gift this might be memorable and last him a while.
It's quite a difference in price, so I just wondered if anyone out there can help me choose...
:T
Thanks!

If you can shop at a Costco you can make serious savings on expensive brandy.0

If Ducasse sells it in his restaurants then it can't be half bad0 -
Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
