Edinburgh Accommodation During Tattoo
Options
I was a happy bunny this morning after managing to secure tickets for my parents to attend the tattoo as a wee surprise to say thank you for all their support this past year but nearly had a heart attack when I started looking at accommodation prices. I knew they would be steep but by heck not that steep! Any recommendations greatly appreciated (ps a short taxi ride if need be is fine).
Many thanks

Not sure where to recommend but you could consider places that are within travel distance by train as well. The trains usually put on extra trains and run later during the tattoo season. I've travelled to the tattoo from Falkirk before and got last train home, think it was around midnight time.0

Edinburgh has a great bus service so you could look at some of the B+Bs in the Newington/Minto St/Cameron toll area. There is a travelodge both in town (off the Royal Mile) and at Cameron Toll.0

Actually there are a load of Travel Lodges now in Edinburgh plus one due to open soon I think in Princes Street.

Accom in Edinburgh can do this to you - Even the budget places go through the roof around the Tattoo/Festival and Hogmanay times.
Starting looking about six months earlier would have been your best bet.
However, transport across the central belt is good, so if you can find somewhere outside the city on the line into Princes St, you ought to have more sensible prices.0 -
I've stayed in the student halls of residence, which are available to the public during the tatoo, ( or they used to be.) Good value for money, a walkable distance to the centre, ( if you like walking)
or a bus stop located nearby.
Try Pollock Halls of Residence, EdinburghFred - Where's your get up and go?
Barney - It just got up and went.

It is expensive here during the festival, I've heard good things about the Hostel in Leith walk which is very very close to the town centre http://www.hihostels.com/dba/hostels-Edinburgh-Central-SYHA-050031.en.htm?hiavail=Y#book
They are getting booked up but there are still a few vacancies.0 -
Very good train service to Glasgow Queen Street, Stirling, Falkirk, there is a travelodge which is about a two minute walk from Queen Street Station, the train journey is about 45 minutes from Edinburgh Waverly to Glasgow and they do extra journeys at the festival as one of the other posters said. Thanks to all the competition posters.0

We paid a lot to get a hotel near the castle. There is so much to see and we did not want to waste time commuting.
If this is their first visit, I am sure they will have a great time. Be sure to tell them to wrap up warm, It can be bitterly cold in the stands."A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Ride hard or stay home :iloveyou:0 -
I wouldn't commute unless I really had no choice, you knackered enough after the performance without having a long journey to your hotel and if it's the late performance on a Saturday then it's going to be a very long day. I agree with missile it's very cold even on a warm night is cold, I know they now have new seating but the seats when I used to go weren't very comfy and I always advise people to take something soft to sit on.0
