Is Holland & Barrett a rip-off?

I went in to H&B this morning to buy some Folic Acid tablets. £7.00 for 250 which I thought seemed a bit steep so didn't purchase. In Waitrose, I got 90 tablets for £1.30...
Makes me wonder...

I usually buy from the H&B penny sale (buy one, and another for 1p), Evening Primrose, Glucoamine supplements from Poundland. As to what is more effective than the other, how can we really tell?

A lot of people think vitamins and supplements are just quack medicine:think:

A lot of the time I think it is. Where I live it's a few doors down from an independent health food store which is almost always cheaper, even when there's a penny sale on as H&B's prices go up a bit. Their branded foods are also more expensive than they are elsewhere.

remember to check what amount your item contails. E.g. was it 8mg or 1000mg .... there can be a BIG difference in the quality of vitamins with regards to price :)
  • Thats a good point LilMiss. I just checked and both pots contain tablets of 400mg (or some funny µg symbol). Loulou, it is in the 1p offer and I suppose that helps but I didnt want a huge stash of tablets. One pot is enough for now. Thanks for the input folks. I suppose I think of H&B as the place to go to for pills but now I am more aware that things could be much cheaper elsewhere.

I never thought of using Waitrose for tablets, and I have all these John Lewis vouchers! Thank you :)

H & B are definitely cheaper for some things eg oat bran! So I think you just have to be aware of the going rate and as usual shop around! At least you can look online for the prices instead of wearing out shoe leather and energy!

It's normally only ever worth buying from there when there are 'offers' that bring the price down to a more respectable level. Other than that it does seem to be a bit of a rip-off (as with most health stores).
