I've been getting quotes of around the £2000 mark for adding my 17 year old daughter to my car (genuinely my own and only car) insurance. That's an eight year old 1.4 diesel, a reliable little runner, which has nevertheless needed a service, an MOT, a new battery and brake pads since Christmas. Simply maintaining a car and replacing stuff that wears out counts as nothing going wrong. You can't afford a car, I'm sorry.

One thing that does worry me-I hope this is your idea and your credit-trashed boyfriend isn't expecting to drive a car you pay for. Because if so, you are being royally used. Sorry if I'm wrong, but you are virtually the same age as my daughter, which brings out the protective maternal streak...;)

  • Several things spring to mind here. Your parents are doing you no favours by not charging you any rent. As soon as you start earning, you should be contributing to the household you live in. Secondly, if you are planning to take on financial obligations such as mobile phone contracts and (in the future) car payments/insurance, you make sure there is enough in your account to cover a month's payment no matter when that payment is taken. I have a budget sheet with all my monthly direct debits on it and even if that direct debit is taken the day before payday, the money is there for it because I have budgeted for it. I recommend making a list of any payments and keeping enough in your account to cover them, if only to save yourself charges for missed direct debits from your mobile provider and your bank.

I honestly don't think the loan route is an option you can even consider yet.
