Baking question..

Hello, I'm fairly new to baking and would appreciate some advice. I baked some soda farls today which taste lovely but are quite hard on the outside. Now traditionally in NI our soda farls would be quite chewy on the outside but not this hard.... I was just wondering if more experienced bakers would know what causes this?

Thanks for reading

It was the temp on the recipe, do you think lowering it a bit might help?

    Hi,

What temperature was in your recipe? I usually bake them at 180 degrees. The secret with soda farls is mixing and rolling them out as quickly as possible and baking them immediately.

Thanks pink-winged the oven was set at 200, I'll try baking them at 180 next time to see if it helps.

I did mix and roll them out quickly. I've been baking muffins for a while so have got the mixing bit pretty well sussed.

You can soften the crust on soda bread by wrapping it in a clean tea towel as soon as it comes out of the oven.
