Hi
Can anyone tell me how to claim on work travel expenses? I have a private car and work pays me 38p a mile for petrol. I was told you can claim if there is a difference between work and national average on fuel paid back? Can anyone shed some light on this please

it won't be a lot of money though - and if you do over 10,000 miles a year you will owe the tax man money!

the first 10k miles are allowed at 45p so you can claim tax back on the difference - so 7p in your case which means you will get back 1.4p per mile if you are a basic rate taxpayer.

however, after 10,000 miles, you are only allowed to claim 25p / mile so if your employer still gives you 38p then you owe the tax on 13p / mile!
