37 with NO credit history. can he get a mortgage?

Options
my brother is 37 years of age and is finally planning to settle down and is HOPING to get a mortgage.
He is living in scotland and needs aprox £40000 mortgage and has roughly £3000 deposit.
His problem is that he has NO credit history whatsoever good or bad.
He has never had a credit card, loan, or any type of credit in his life, He doesn't even have a bank account as he worked for a small engineering firm that always paid him cash.
Also I think the last time he was on the electrol register was when he was 18(voted once and never again!)
Would any lenders consider him at the moment or would he have to build up a credit history first? (if he can get credit due to above!)
any help would be greatley appreciated.

peace

kate

  • There are several problems with this scenario

I think this might be the biggy
Also I think the last time he was on the electrol register was when he was 18

I guess first step is to get him a bank account (at least then the £3000 will be earning interest) - and then letting us know if this was successful

  • Some lenders 'credit check' but don't 'credit score'. But these are now very rare. Try cheltenham and gloucester. They do credit score but they are mainly looking for bad credit. Your brother will need 2 or 3 items for proof of address for the last 3 years. :)

A bank/building society account is the starting point. Some post offices can be helpful in this regard.
