Having done all the wedding stuff (twice lol) I thought I was done with being ripped off just for something having the word 'wedding' in. Everything seems to be horrendously priced if it's for a wedding. Flowers, cakes, cars...everybody seems to use weddings to fleece as much money as they can.
6 months since I got married and I have to confess I havent yet had my dress cleaned. I popped in the dry cleaners the other day and asked how much it would be to clean a long silk gown. She asked what I meant by long, was it a ball gown, did it have layers of netting etc. I said it was floor length, silk, no layers but did have internal corsetry. Then stupidly I mentioned it has a small train. At that point she looked at me and I had to say it had been my wedding dress. She then started talking about wedding dresses and price would be £150 to have it cleaned and boxed, or £120 to have it cleaned and bagged. I said I was happy with the bag it's in which puzzled her and she ended up saying it would be between £100 and £120.
I kept saying it wasn't a wedding dress as such, it's very simple, no beading, said I was fed up of prices being mad just because of the word wedding and asked how much it would cost to clean a long, silk, internally corsetted, lace up back dress. At which point she reluctantly quoted me the ballgown price of £25.
How do these people sleep at night???

My OH wrote a blog entry about how annoyed he was at how the price is inflated at the mention of weddings.
I won't copy the entry but it's here if you want to read; A Note on Wedding Companies❤Planned our wedding, still planning lessons❤

Totally agree with your OH in his blog - nice one!
My OH has a disco business and will charge more for weddings...if they mean more work which they often do. But he wouldn't ask an extra hundred quid just because it is a wedding, so why do other businesses do that. Friend at work rang a cake shop and said she wanted 3 white iced cakes for her wedding but she'd be doing the decorations on them herself - she was quoted £350 for the 3 cakes; her cousin rang the same shop on the pretext of getting 3 plain cakes for an elderly relatvies birthday party and was quoted £1500 -
It is disgusting!
Someone I work with rang a venue to ask about holding a wedding reception there for 50 with a buffet and was quoted £4000, her friend rang and asked the same thing but for a birthday and was quoted £2000!
When we researched cakes, we asked about false tiers (because we wanted to height of a three tier but didn't want that much cake) and they said that they would be half the price of the real cake, yet it would require them to do nothing but put icing on a round cake, no decoration, but they wanted £60!❤Planned our wedding, still planning lessons❤

I can't really speak for other businesses but I know that when I used to be in a band we would charge extra for weddings on the basis that
- we would put more effort into learning songs that the bride/groom wanted us to play
- if one of our 6 piece was ill we would never cancel a wedding gig we would pay another musician to come along with us
- timings were quite often unrealistic or didn't work out so we would often end up at a venue for two/three hours more than we were told to expect to
- amazingly we got fed/watered much less at weddings than at other gigs for example birthdays and festivals!0 -
i had phoned up a local bakery and asked for a 3 teir chocolate fudge cake, covered in white chocolate so you could not see brown chocolate,
i was told, thats sounds like a wedding cake, so thats £300...i said...no thanks...
i went into the store a few weeks later, and asked could i order 3 of their chocolate fudge cakes for a party, a small, medium and large one, only could i have it covered in white chocolate.
the bill......£30!! :money:0
