Overseas letters asking for money

Can anybody help me?

I have just found out my Grandma has been sending money overseas to help out "people less fortunate than herself". She has been mainly sending money to Canada and America to people who plead that they need money to help them set up communes or similar.

She is 96 years old, still in her own home and feels very sorry that these people cannot cope. This last month she has sent over £700 to various pleas from letters which seem to just "arrive" on her doorstep. ???

Obviously, she cannot afford to keep doing this, but she feels so sorry for them she cannot help herself. Once they receive the money, they send more pleas and so the situation goes on and on.

Does anybody know how I can stop her receiving these letters on her doorstep. There do not seem to be any from this country, just mainly America and Canada (although the replies are sent back to somewhere in this country - I presume to cash the cheques).

I feel this is a scam!! - but how can I persuade her to feel the same??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

  • I've got 2 suggestions but I don't know how feasible they are:
    • have her mail redirected to your address so you can screen them
    • Write to the addressee informing them that you will be passing on their mail to the police authority for investigation
Hopefully more informed people than I will come along with more concrete help. I hope you manage to get it sorted out soon.
  • You can't have another persons mail redirected to your home without their permission that would be illegal.

It would be better to hand the letters over to the police, there is currently an advert on TV warning people of these scams.
    Waddle you do eh?
