I buy meat from the local asian shops as they often have a built in butcher where we are in the north. Very cheap if your making a curry/soup or such. You can pick your own pieces and watch them chop it to your desired size so can see how clean its done.
  • No chance. I once saw someone taking a piddle round the back of one of these then go back in and start serving. Certainly didnt wash his hands - and as far as I could see there was no sink inside even if he had wanted too.

And you did nothing ? did you not report him to the market owner/authority for this ? :(

And someone please tell me what "Free Range " meat is/means ?
Or maybe it`s like the organic meat sold at a local farmers market that turned out to come from Zimbawe

I know people who worked as butchers, restaurant owners etc who go early and buy their meat there in bulk. I have been using the same one for about 12 years or so in Somerset and had to track them down when they moved. I have seen in their van which is very hygenic and the meat is usualy British. You can ring them up if you have a specific order and you can see the meat before buying and they cut it in front of you. It is certainly much cheaper but you have to buy in bulk so need your freezer space or go with friends and share.

My advice is every now and again try somewhere totally new or different.
You can always go back the place you normally buy from the next week if the random place disappoints.
Hi there! We’ve had to remove your signature. It was so good we removed it because we cannot think of one so good as you had and need to protect others from seeing such a great signature.
  • The butcher that comes to our local market, goes to others in the Sussex area on the other days during the week. His vans are quite new, certainly expensive, refrigerated. The guy that does the talking/selling is the same guy that has been there for years and I get the impression it is a family company.
    The company is called Malpass.
When I can afford to I like to go and spend £50 and stock my freezer up with meat. The quality is superb.
I spent £20 the other day on 20 fresh, thick pork chops and a loin on pork joint, equivilant to another 20 chops, cut the loin into four joints - each one of those would have cost around £4.50 in the local supermarket. The chops are superb.
I didn't buy them myself but he was selling two legs of lamb, £20 - he will cut them in half if you ask him. Topside of beef joints, that would have been around £15 in Tesco, 2 for £20. Fresh chicken breast fillets for £10, probably the same amount of breasts as you get in the economy/frozen range, but good quality, not pumped full of water. 3 very good sized chickens for £10.

I suppose there are good ones and bad, but the one that goes to Chichester and Ford Market in West Sussex is one I would happily reccomend.
