Child maintenance stops on your child's 19th birthday, Child benefit & Child tax credit continues until the end of August .

It may be worth contacting the CSA if it is paid through them, as if it is continued to be collected and forwarded to you, you might find yourself having to repay the money making things even harder for yourself.

    Just a thought. ;)

If it is paid through private agreement, then you need to know the liability DOES end on the 19th b/day unless there are exceptional circumstances that would need investigating further, but very unlikely to be received. :(

Maintenance is payable through CSA until Child benefit ceases to be paid.

csa will stop on the childs 19th birthday, it can only be paid up to the age of 19 if the child remains in qualifying education for csa purposes. it should automatically flag up on the csa system, however as we all know errors can occur. oh received a letter around about the time his child turned 19 in feb this year stating the csa would stop for eldest child, we also received a new schedule as he will still be paying for his youngest. oh and pwc both received the same info. if it does not flag up and you continue to receive csa payments, it will be classed as an overpayment. oh eldest child is still in school and pwc is still receiving child benefit which can be paid up until the age of 20.

Or the childs 19th b/day, even if CB benefit is still payable.

I am still confused as to how a 19 or even 20 year old can be classed as a child though...!

I maybe wrong...but I thought it was the term after their 19th birthday???

Apparently....and I quote from the gentleman I spoke to at the CSA the other week.....'' The QC child is still classed as a child as long as CB is being paid'' !!!??

We are in the position that QC left college on 22nd Feb2012....the cut off for CB should of been the last day of Feb., next cut of is 31st May.....PWC has not informed CB that QC has left college and no longer in further education.....Gentleman from CSA rang her 10days ago and she confirmed to him that QC no longer in education, he aptly informed her she '' could be claiming benefits frauduently and be asked to repay them '' aptly she took CB phone number and case/query has been left open for another 4 wks, when we have to ring CSA again to see if she has made phone call!!!!!.....and yes we do have to continue paying until CB is stopped!!

skiba, i called csa about a similar situation, it stops the monday following their 19th birthday unless their birthday falls on a monday. Then it would be that day.

Keep calling the csa, they can , contact the cb and they can request the information, they do work together sometimes, even though they tell you they dont.

They may still qualify for child benefit up till they are 20 depending on college course, (if he was to go back into college) but, csa payments cease on their 19th birthday.

As for the case being left open for another four weeks, we had that for approx five months!!!! However, if pwc has admitted to csa child is no longer in education, then csa can inform cb. Or you can.

We actually informed csa, that they were getting their final payment, as we paid two months to the pwc????? for a child we had had for the whole time, we got a phone call the following day saying the case had been closed!!

You are nearly there, just hang in there.

Kevin, i totally agree about an 18,19 20 year old being a child,,,,,baffles me everytime, old enough to vote, get married without consent, drink etc, but still qualifies for child benefit,,, no wonder we are in the mess we are in lol
  • i am so confused last month i got a months maintance then last week got another 2 weeks but then got a letter from them with a payment schelede until feb 2013 its so confusing

We did notify CB online, but they have 4 wks to investigate....that is up this week, makes me very cross....one phone call to the college is all thats needed to confirm either way.....you can bet they try harder to find thigs out about a NRP.....though I must admit the gentleman I spoke to was quite understanding.
  • just to clarify child maintenance is usually paid whilst child benefit is in payment for the child - at the moment the only expection is when the child turns 19 as the current legislations only allows for maintenance to be paid up to the 19th birthday - i imagine when the new system comes into play that will most probably change to be paid longer. best to give them a quick call to advise that the child is now 19 to ensure it gets closed asap.
