in Cutting tax
After watching Martin's Council Tax banding programme, I checked ours & it turns out that our house & our neighbours were banded higher (we were an 'E') than our other neighbour. I phoned our Assessor & told him this. A week later we received a letter (as did our immediate neighbour) stating we would be rebanded to the lower band ('D') & refunded back to 1998 - when we bought the house.
Not only do we now save ourselves £300+ a year by being in the lower band, but we received our refund yesterday (£2500.00) without any fuss at all....
The Assessor did all this on 1 phone call (on behalf of both us & our immediate neighbour). I think we have been incrediably fortunate at how quick the process was, as I know by reading many of the posts here, how long & drawn out it can be.
We live in Scotland & I must say it is nice being given something back from the Council for once....(though it is our money anyway!!!)
Good luck to all those still trying to get back what is rightfully yours - DON't GIVE UP.

Lucky you, well done. Where abouts in Scotland do you live. We are with Renfrewshire valuation board and they won't look into giving us back overpayments for the last 8 years but will look at rebanding the house.0

Why won't they refund you if your band is wrong? We are Perth & Kinross area. Keep on their backs & hopefully you will be successfull too.

They have still to agree the banding is wrong but I don't have any worries about that, the house next door is the exact same as ours and they are a band below. They won't give us a refund on the money overpaid though, they have told us that already. If you don't mind, when we go to our appeall I might use you as an example. How can one council repay overcharing and another not.

No problem, just mention Perth & Kinross & see how they can justify that one?
