My cousin worked for one of these companies. They treat their staff pretty badly, they get a poor wage unless they sign up lots of people. She doesn't have a car bless her, so she used to have to get lifts or walk to the leads she drummed up by phone. So I can see door-to-door sales may not be unusual.
The point is though, is that the OP's seller could be legit. My cousin organised free installs for lots of people while she worked there, including my parents, without any "catch".
