Endowments did better after the dot.com crash and many were starting to head towards target again. Then along came the credit crunch and global recession and put them right back down again. (drops the size of the dot.com crash and global recession tend to only happen once in a generation. We had 2 in 10 years - hence the problems).

Those maturing in the near future are likely to be under target. However, those with 7 or more years to go may well find that the events of the last 10 years have done them a lot of favours as the units during that period would have been bought a lot cheaper than in the late 90s and "hopefully" over the longer term these will then grow from that position. No guarantees as always with investing but regular payments do work best in volatile markets. Money already built up suffers in volatile markets. (which is why anyone cancelling regular payments to say pensions when they here the markets have fallen is doing the wrong thing).
