Faulty hair extensions!

Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place but was wondering if anybody could help me.
Basically, I ordered a set of hair extensions for my eldest daughter from a company online where I found many good reviews and finally got her some which were made of real human hair and wear 'remy' standard from which i understand is of the highest standard.
Anyway, they arrived this morning and the match wasn't that great (obviously that wasn't their fault) so i sent my daughter to the hairdressers and now shes actually got her own hair to match up with them so it's all good. That was until she went to styling her hair. It says on the companys FAQs
Can I straighten, curl, cut and wash you human hair extensions?
Absolutely! In fact you can treat them just like you would your own hair! Just remember that, like your own hair, human hair extensions are not indestructible so treat them with care and respect! See our hair care page for more details!
So my daughter did exactly that, she used her heat protection spray and she went to straighten them and the only way I can describe it is that it looked as if some of the hair was made of plastic because it started to turn black and then it got black sticky stuff on the actual plates themselves - which I took a photo of here.

So, being told this was actual human hair and spending nearly £80 for them I emailed the company with the information I just said above and included the picture and received this reply
Thanks for writing to us regarding your concerns. We take extreme care with our product so it can have as long as possible a life with you. Unfortunately we cannot predict the manner in which they are treated and cared for and thus, under our terms and conditions, are not responsible for the condition of the hair once it is used. While we appreciate and value your opinion regarding the quality of the hair and how you have treated it, hundreds of customers each week purchase and use halo items - all extremely satisfied with the quality, thickness and design. I appreciate what you've shared but the hair is most certainly not plastic - and plastic would also not melt or go black.
Now, what can I do? I think this is absolutely disgusting from the company. Fair enough if we'd had them for a while but they were only ordered yesterday and received today, what could we have possibly done to them to make them go wrong. I feel this is clearly a quality issue as the product is not what it was described as and frankly I felt the ending to be quiet rude, I provided the same explanation to what had happened and didn't actually suggest it was plastic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
Kirsty

Print out all the website promises and guarantees before they can change them. Did you pay by credit card? If so, email the hair company that you want a refund or you will initiate a chargeback.

Id go to trading standards, false advertising, if the hair was 100% human hair it wouldnt of done that would it? As it says with human hair extensions you can treat them as you would your own hair so can curl/straighten with ghds and curng wands etc so what they have sold you is synthetic hair with probably very little real human hair in it.

Its absolutely shocking that companies think they can get away with this type of stuff. I wear hair extensions all the time and ive come across this website before and nearly purchased some hair, glad I didnt! There is no way Remy hair would do that when heat is applied and they are trying to fobb you off, I would defo talk to trading standards. Ive learnt which sites I can trust to buy decent hair from and its a steep learning curve as its alot of money to p!ss up the wall! there is another site which sells l&k hair think they call it, avoid the aswell, bought some supposedly human hair from them and after 1 day was a tangled mess and was constantly frizzy , I wrote a review of the hair on their website and surprise suprise within 24 hours the had deleted it! Makes me angry they can rip people off like that!

I wonder if there's a service that allows you to buy the hair direct from the hair donor (meet the chicken supplying the egg, so to speak) and then you go together to a wig/extension making place that cuts the hair and makes the hairpiece out of your directly harvested hair.

Well are you willing to travel to or pay for them to come to the UK. The hair is from India and Russia, the girls have to sell their hair for money and they don't get that much compared to what you pay for it here. They don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts, they need money for food etc.

I don't want to buy the hair. I have below the waist length hair, and was wondering about if I could get it directly to the person wanting it.

Thanks for your advice, contacted the company again and received a similar reply. My daughters now decided to take it into her own hands and make a video for YouTube to show whats happening and is going to rant about it on there, technology eh? :rotfl:

Well the hair before it can be used as extensions has to be treated etc. I watched a documentary on this subject once. I have cropped hair and no interest in extensions. They do not like using Western hair it seems too much heating treatments etc used on it. They like virgin hair as they call it, usually from young teens.
  • Hair extensions are rarely made from virgin cut hair - that is hair that has not been chemically altered (coloured); crimped or stripped of the outer cuticle (which is often the case). This makes 99% of all hair extensions much weaker and porus than hair that has not had any treatment at all. I work with hair extensions and cut human hair every day of my life and the grades vary vastly. There are a lot of charlatans out there who will pass off inferior hair as virgin or top quality Remy when they are in fact poor quality human hair mixed with animal hair (yes you heard that right). At the end of the day you get what you pay for and £80 for a full set of Remy or virgin hair should be treated with some skepticism. I would advise using extreme caution when using heated appliances on all hair extension products no matter what the company claims. However having said all that I do believe the lady has a right to try and get her money back as she has obviously been duped into believing that these extensions were better quality than they are.
  • Halo have a strong twitter presence as well as on YouTube. It might be worth linking the video and photos up there as well.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.
