Northern Rock affordability calculator accuracy?

Hi - Ive spent some time today on the different banks websites putting figures into there 'what we may lend you' calculators, on the Northern Rock one it asks more questions than most of the others asking you to be more specific with living costs etc but the figure it states they 'may' be able to lend me is actually x5 my salary!!,
I thought in todays climate your lucky to get x4 or even x3?, maybe I should just take it with a pinch of salt?,
anyone tried the calculator then applied recently and was the figure they offered similar to the calculator?, thanks

You will have to prove the figures that you have put into the affordability calculator with Northern Rock if they deem them to be below average.

A few lenders can go to around 5x income, important thing though is can you comfortably afford those payments? Can you afford them if they were 2% higher?
