Buying Ghee for the first time please help !

I low carb and have been reading about ghee, which is made from butter with the milk solids removed. It's virtually carb and lactose free, keeps indefinitely and has a much higher smoke point than any cooking oil.
So although many people won't regard it as healthy (not exactly low fat), for me and my damaged pancreas it would be great.
Problem is which one to buy and where ??
Hoping there are some people who can advise me please !

I get it in from the asian shop - my tesco has an 'ethnic aisle' and has it there. Its not in the fridge with other fats - is generally sold in tins. I love cooking in ghee - it makes the best french toast!!People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

If you are not near an 'asian' shop you can buy on-line.

Tesco Express near me doesn't even do lamb chops let alone ethnic food and local ASDA calls pasta, rice, pasta sauces and pesto World Foods.
There are a couple of Polish shops but I don't know of any other ethnic shops nearby - really weird because we've got quite a diverse population and loads of ethnic restaurants and takeaways including a Polish cafe and Nepalese takeaway which seem a tad exotic for quite a small town.
So I will have to buy online and that's why I need to find out which are the good brands. Also is ethyl butrate something to avoid ?
rachbc you're teasing me, I can't eat French toast now :P0 -

Hi Edwardia,
I would say your more likely to get ghee in asian shops rather then european shops (inc polish).
Larger supermakets such as tesco, asda and morrisons normally stock them too esp if its in a area with different cultures.
If your lucky you can purchase from tesco on line and possible asda.
the most common brand is east end but i cant comment on whether its any good.0 -
Hi, I made my own by clarifying a pack of butter. Worked a treat and tastes lovely :¬)0

hi edwardia,
i would echo teapackets idea too. why not clarify butter to make ghee? i have tried it. it's a bit tricky (trying not to burn it) but you get the hang of it0 -
DIY. It only takes a few minutes. Melt butter and keep on very low heat skimming the top until there is nothing left to skim. Filter theough a clean J cloth and job is done.0

Er I think I'm too lazy to do that and besides wouldn't I have to buy a LOT of butter to make it OR buy a lot of cream then make butter then make ghee.. and then pass out from exhaustion.
I'm a SAHW but I don't think my husband expects me to be churning my own butter and making ghee somehow.0
