 I'm so impressed by all the replies, but just want to ask ... in the big picture, what is the point? I don't want to sound thick but believe basic number is the most any of us need and/or use in ordinary life ... and the ability to know a good deal when you see one ... with the help of MSE! Why don't schools teach personal finance for the real world? By the way, good luck with the homework. I was rubbish at Maths at school.:o

same here finc! i dont really know the point but i did maths to A level! I suppose in some jobs it might be useful. I plan to teach Business Studies in the not to distant future and i hope that I can incorporate Personal Finance because its soooo important and seriously lacking in schools ..

  • I'm doing my PGCE (teacher training qualification) to become a Business Studies teacher right now and Financial Literacy is part of our remit. I'm hopefully going to be teaching Enterprise next year (basically Business Studies Lite and Maths) to years 7 and 8. Good luck with your course.

If you need any help with linear equations, let me know!

Thanks to all who helped last night. DH and I were at a loss and have no street cred with dd.

She was very impressed that I knew a website where people would bother to help other people for no gain to themselves, so as well as help with homework she gained a very valuable lesson in human nature.

Thanks once again to one and all!

I was rubbish with maths at school too. That's why, age 71, I'm doing GCSE Maths and I'm just revising for the exams on Monday (it's the modular form).

It's a great feeling not to have to say 'I was rubbish with maths at school therefore I'll always be rubbish with it for ever and ever, amen'.

Linear equations come into Module 5 and we haven't done them yet, we start after Easter, so I can't help with the question!

well done Margaret and good luck in exams. DD is in year 8 and I think it seems really hard for year 8 and also for 38year old Mum!

Don't see the point anymore in offering advice to people who only want to be agreed with...

It depends on what area your DD is going to go into. I wanted to go into IT and as a kid my attitude on languages stank. "Why would I ever need french/german etc? Besides, I already speak 2 languages!" Then a few years after starting work, I find myself stood in the middle of Paris and I can't order a sandwich!

I'm also surprised how much of my A Level Economics and GCSE physics I still use.

Anyway my point is even though it may not seem useful at the moment, you'll be surprised if/when you need it.

I agree though that schools should teach a bit of financial management but on the whole this is a job for parents.
