meal ideas for colonoscopy diet

I wonder if you could give some help in providing some meal ideas for my dh?
He is due to go in for a colonoscopy next week and has been given a list of things he can and cannot eat.
2 days before he has to stop eating fish, meat, fruit, vegetables and cereals.
He can continue other foods including white bread, eggs, rice, dairy and fluids. He is allowed clear soups but we have to sieve out the particles.

I always cook from scatch anyway - learnt on here last year and have saved loads - so any ideas for meals or perhaps pointing me in the right direction in the indexes is greatly appreciated.

My Dh has had this procedure done several times. Usually he has to be on a strict diet for 24 hours.
Starts the day at about 8 with a boiled egg and a piece of toast also cup of tea with milk and sugar.
Next meal he has is a cup of bovril at 12noon with a clear jelly afterwards and cup of tea with milk and sugar.
After this he is only allowed cups of bovril up to 8 o'clock and tea without milk.
    Must drink plenty of water.
So important that he sticks to the dieat otherwise his bowel won't be emptied properely and he might have to go through the procedure all over again.
Might be worth you ringing the surgeons secretary for advice.
    Hope this helps.

I've had this done, more times than I like to remember, got to do it all again soon for a similar procedure. Eggs became a major part, scrambled with cheese in or boiled, toast, plain yoghurt, egg rice, clear soups just mean the toast goes down easier :rotfl: It's boring, bland etc etc but as emilyt said worth it so doesn't have to do it all again. Make sure the white bread you get isn't one of these fancy ones aswell as that can affect it I was told. One I am unsure on is Rice Crispies/similar I am sure one nurse said I was allowed them and another said no.
One day I might be more organised...........

    Hi there
I agree with Emily,I have had this done loads of times,I have never had to follow any plan until 24 hours before, then it is clear fluids only.
A little tip with the Picolax you have to take,if he doesn't like it,get the glass of Picolax and another with lemonade, put a straw in each and suck them together, you can hardly taste it that way and is more likely to get down without gagging :D
Just to warn you from my experience, don't eat any clear boiled sweets,I thought last time that as you suck them, nobody would know, during the procedure,I was watching the screen and saw something 'odd' the surgeon said it's ok,it's your meds, although they look a little odd,I didn't want to tell him that I actually hadn't taken my meds,it was sweets :o they don't dissolve to nothing!!
Good luck to your DH,it's not a nice thing to have done and doesn't get easier the more times you have it done.

Thanks for that tip my DH does gag as he drinks the picolax. Will do this next time he has to go and have the procedure done.

    Hey,

I had this in December, its a pain I know. Unlike the others I did have to follow the meal plan and take senna for 2 nights before.

Low residue stuff can be very boring. I sieved the bits out of chicken noodle soup, that was nice.

    Different flavours of jelly.

Beat evap til its like whipped cream and then stir in jelly made up with 1/2 the amount of water. Makes a kind of mousse which is very nice.

I'm a bit odd, in that I quite like plain rice. Cooked in chicken stock or with a bit of salt its ok.

I also had a big bowl of mash, cos I like mash... You have to be careful with adding some dairy stuff to it if memory serves though.

Picolax is really nasty stuff in my experience. I don't know whether this will make your OH feel any better, but that was the worst bit for me. The procedure was a doddle (ah - pethidine and midazolam!!!! great stuff)

But do make sure he drinks masses of fluids, it helps - honest.

Big hugs to you and OH, hope it goes ok!
