For a face/body scrub try oatmeal or used fresh coffee grounds - the latter is supposed to be good for cellulite too but it makes a bit of a mess!

I love the foodie homemade ideas but I also make cards which can be personalised to suit the person(s) receiving them and it usually puts a smile on the recipients face - although it is very tempting to buy lots of nice bits and pieces to put on them from the local papercraft shop :)

Homemade card + homemade cupcake = extra brownie points:rotfl:

I make my own white dipping sauce like you get in the kebab shop. I use a modified version of the Takeaway secret one but much healthier.
    1tbsp mayo
    4tbsp nat yog
    1/4 tsp garlic powder
    pinch dried herbs
    1tsbp water.

As it is so much lower in fat than the shop version (or than the TS version which is the other way round for the yog and mayo), I don't feel guilty about using it on everything!

  • Cake- making a sponge only takes 15 minutes and is soooo much cheaper and tastier than a bought cake!
Bread- OK a bit of a hassle every day but much nicer!
Curry and pasta sauce- why would anyone buy a jar?
Fruit and veg- grow your own for veg that tastes of something more than water with a hint of acid!

I don't cook curry/Indian type dishes often enough to make it worth buying individual spices before they go stale

I'm not saying that spices can't go stale, but I buy mine by the 500g or 1kg bag and I'm still waiting for them to go "off". I use spices virtually every day but I know I can go years between top-ups. They're stored in a cupboard in recycled Douwe Egbert coffee jars (airtight containers, if the lid is properly closed).

Back on topic: Home made satay sauce. Tastes wonderful. Costs (literally) peanuts. I use this recipe which is made with peanut butter.

  • Hi I made really health cheap dog biscuits for my dogs yesterday, I made approx 40 big bone shaped biscuits & it cost me about 70p and I know exactly what is in them. My dogs love them & I will be making other types to see what works best. I know it used the oven but you can make them & cook them when you are doing dinner so not using the oven more than normal. :j
If anyone has any recipes for dog treats please let me know

    Everything handmade is better
    a) Its made with love and care
    b) You know exactly what is in it
    c) Handmade gifts and clothes are loved and cherished

Although I struggle with health problems I try to make as much myself as I possibly can. I have raised beds in my garden and containers in which I grow fruit and veg. I think I have made life difficult for my DDiL's but both the boys are able to cook, clean, garden and make things.

The key is to be organised. I have a basket by my chair in the sittingroom with things that need hand finishing ie cards, clothes, gifts, fabric for patchworking etc so I never have an excuse for idle hands. My sons and daughter have bought me gadgets and gizmo's over the years as presents so that I can continue cooking etc with minimal pain and discomfort.

Please can you share this recipe?

My dogs have a 'bedtime biscuit' every night before 'settle down to sleep' and i am just about to run out of the big bone shaped biscuits they like to have.
