Tax Rebate - confused

I got 2 letters in the post today from the tax office. The first I opened was a cheque for £43. The second was a letter from them saying that had incorrectly taxed me and would issue me a refund - so that was what the cheques was for I thought. But the letter says they owe me £65. Im confused!!

    Clarify the £65 'letter'? Is it a P800? If so is there more than one year?

    its a tax calculation from tax year 2008 - 2009. The only reference to P800 is in a leaflet that came with it

    It is a P800. But - you're right - it doesn't actually say so on the base form they use.

    The repayment due will be the final figure ...... and with a bold '16' to the right hand side? Is that £43 or £65?

    ach looks like Im getting in a muddle. The letters are from different tax years, I'll probably get the rest in the post over the next couple of days. The cheque is a refund from tax year 2010-2011. The letter is from tax year 2008 - 2009. Mind you the letter isnt clear if I owe then £65 or they owe me, it says "and underpayment for an earlier year was included in your PAYE code but the actual amount for that year was lower". Does that mean I can expect a second cheque in the post - I hope so!!

    Does it have a '16' to the right of the £65 ...... or something different?

    If the P800 you have shows £65 - but the cheque is £43 ....... then they will have netted any underpayment off. Normally only one cheque is issued if several years are calculated together.

    hi, the letter and the cheque are for different tax years. The £65 does have 16 next to it so it looks like they do owe me money. Strange it didnt all come in one cheque

    So - the £65 is an overpayment of tax in 08-09. But that will have been carried forward (it will show as 'adjusted') onto later year(s).

    And the £43 will more than likely be the net overpayment of all the years they've calculated. They can only get 2 of the calculations in an envelope - so they do arrive separately sometimes.

    This is at Note 16 from the Notes that were enclosed with your P800 ;

    (If the repayment covers more than one tax year, we will send you one cheque which will cover all the years we have reviewed)
