Giving up job

Hi,
I am looking for some advice on what will happen if l give up my job. There is a high chance that l am going to be redeployed to a job that l don't want to do. If l resign will l be entitled to benefits? I am on my own with children living in council accomodation.

Thanks

If you resign you will lose your right to benefits such as JSA as you can expect it to be sanctioned.

Yes you will get a 6 month sanction unless you can give a good reason.

And being redeployed to a job you 'don't want to do' is a seriously crappy reason. You have children and should be considering their needs.

I'm in a similar situation kind of, although I left a permanent job of 10 years for a new job offer which was not at all the role they offered me and their attitudes were very discriminatory and sexist to me on my first day, pretty insulting situation tbh, I'm in the process of applying for jsa as there was more to the circumstances than I've mentioned but, I'll still probably get turned down. They did say to me you had to have a good reason for leaving the job or you'd definitely be knocked back.

How is that different from many other people out there?

Well, you'll get sanctions, as other posters have mentioned, if you don't have a valid reason for giving up a perfectly good job other than you just don't want to do it.

Of course, being unable to commute to a new location or an impossible-to-fix childcare problem with a chaotic new shift pattern etc might be justifiable.

But you shouldn't be expecting to collect a pay cheque from the government simply because you "don't want" to do the job :rotfl:
  • I resigned from a job and didn't get sanctioned, but the reason I resigned was because we were moving house over 200 miles away from where we were living.

If you resigned because you would genuinely no longer be able to do the job then you might not get sanctioned, but it has to be a good reason.

    Sanction this, sanction that...

You can (or could a couple of years ago - you'll need to check) claim CONTRIBUTION based JSA for upto 6 months as long as you have two full years of NI payments in any of the last 3 years. I've done this a few times - resigned from real crap jobs and gone on the cont based dole.

This might mean you don't get housing benefit etc though as they're not keen on helping people who jack it in and are not on income/means tested benefits.
  • I think it depends on the nature of the job you are being redeployed to. Would you have to move away? In that case, you can rightfully refuse it. Is there the opportunity of redundancy instead of redeployment?

As others have said it does depend.

My husband resigned from a job in December because we were moving over 200 miles away. He was then able to claim JSA but found a job within a week so didn't need to. He was told he would get JSA then.

I have just started a FT job, earning more than what my husband was, quite a lot more and as he was only on minimum wage, it doesn't make sense for him to work as he is a chef so we need flexible childcare which is either impossible or costs more than he will earn. So he has resigned from his job, looking for a PT weekend job and is allowed to claim.

So in short, I think it depends on why you are resigning.

From everything I heard when I was signing up, it can depend on who you get too.

I was made redundant in February this year and subsequently signed on. I was told that you couldn't sign on if you took voluntary redundancy, and that's where I started seeing this view that it can depend. If you've had a real hard time and took voluntary to escape then some will let you sign on. I didn't take voluntary but as I worked local government it is called voluntary redundancy (no one gets made redundant from local government they take early voluntary - or voluntary as normal people call it - or take voluntary - get made redundant).

I was worried about this when I signed on, but the lady I saw said "yeah, is the same here, stupid really" and oked my claim. Having said that, I really can't advocate quitting on the off chance you get someone sympathetic.
