Health and safety at work

Yes, you do.
I see OP has now edited their original post, making the rest of the thread meaningless. That really annoys me.
Likewise!
People spend their time and effort offering advice - and then the original post is all but deleted and not even a personal thanks. Maybe my post was not helpful to him.
If the OP is to become a union safety rep - let me tell him that he will need all of the advice he can muster - moreso if he has no recognised H&S qualifications.
He can certainly knock me off the list.0 -

"Hi
As a newly appointed health and safety representative at my work place,i would like to ask some advice from you guys.
I work in a stores enviroment and i believe there is an ongoing issue in this area with a Hi-fi (radio) that is used by members of staff.
There have been complaints made to me about the loudness of this radio playing in the workplace and depsite repeated requests to turn it down, they are either ignored or the radio is turned up after a short period of time after turning it down in complete disregard of the requests ti turn it down.
The music is so loud sometimes that i beleive there are human factors issues coming into play on this regarding fellow work colleagues being able to concentrate on the job in hand and also health and safety issues as there are fork lift trucks operating in the immediate area of the radio.
Therefore, can i ask any experts on here on any advice of the type of wording of a letter(email) i could send to my manager and my health and safety department highlighting this issue.
Are there legal limits on how loud a radio can be?
If so should i ask my health and safety department to investigate.
Any advice on this issue would be helpful and appreciated
Thank you
Gary"0 -

Deleting the original post is the hallmark of someone who wants to be told what they want to hear - and doesn't get that, not the hallmark of someone who actually wanted advice

Everybody knows that the right sort of cap gives you authority over others.0 -

A strange assertion taken in the context of your first post.
I know many safety professionals may need to wear a safety helmet occasionally (not a cap),but where he or she would have to wear it, then so would all of the other workers in the vicinity - so (using your analogy) how would you determine who has all of the 'authority' in such a situation?
Maybe everyone is a jobsworth!

What is the difference between the edited and original post? They seem to be asking the same thing essentially having skim read over it.
There are legal limits on noise but I doubt a radio would breach them. I think the issue is not so much that the radio is on, more that it is so loud it could prevent a member of staff in the area from hearing a moving forklift and thus cause an accident. I think this is a valid concern, but OP you need to take noise measurements to back your argument up.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

The stores enviroment i work in is involved with the issuing of aircraft spares direct to aircraft .This work demands the staff work in a meticulous way. Some members of staff have been complaining about the distraction of the radio loudness has on their work and ability to concentrate and communicate effectivly.I dont believe decibal meters are the solution ,its not about turning the radio off to allienate all the staff who want the radio but some members of staff have voiced concerns to me about the loudness of the radio.
Its also not about being a jobsworth but about trying to find a solution to keep everyone happy, because as a newly appointed safety rep i want to do my best for everyone i work with.0 -
