What, in your opinion would be the best way to slow cook some sausages (meat and vegetarian in separate pots) on an outdoor raging wood fire?
I was thinking caserole pots or something? Don't want them to cook too quickly or need much (or any) attention.
Thank you for reading

Pots would do, with a little oil. They will be frying basically so will need turning.
When I was a boy scout we only cooked on open fires when doing week long camps. We would light the fire and when it was established, put a grill rack/bbq grill over the embers. Cook sausages that way. It was basically bbq'ing but on the ground!0 -
As Mr Reeman says, you don't want to be cooking over a raging wood fire, wait until it dies down to embers. If you need a raging fire then drag part of it away & set up a 2nd cooking fire.
If you want a slow unattended cook then some sort of sausage caserole is the only option (unless you buy a dutch oven to oven cook them). Any frying/BBQ needs supervision.0 -
Simmer in water. Finish them in frying pan.0

Thank you, I like the second fire option, great idea.
Also, the casserole idea may be brilliant. I could cook them casserole type affair and them people could pull them out and 'dry' them off in the fire if they want them crispy.
Just to clarify, we will be sat around the fire supervising, I just don't want to remove my bottom from my tree stump too often to cook. I'd rather sit back and enjoy my cheap continental chilled beer and smell the pending sausage bappage ;-)0 -
Embers and in some kind of source.
Best thing I ever cooked was slow roasted beef on top of a wood fire very yummy.Save £200 a month : [STRIKE]Oct[/STRIKE] Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Apr0 -
Boil sausages in water for 5 minutes to cook through. Then burn to the required colour over glowing fire embers.0

Well, I've never boiled sausages before. Very intriguing. Have to have a think about that as it may be nicer to get them cooked on a fork as well after boiling. Thanks.0

Got a barbeque griddle rack thing with handle from a supermarket for £3 which has saved the day.0
