Halifax overdraft debt

My brother had an overdraft with the Halifax whilst at University in 1996. He thought he had paid off his overdraft and had a letter from "Eversheds" saying that the debt would be passed back to the Halifax.
He recently received a letter from Thames Credit saying that the "debt" had been passed onto them. They said the outstanding balance was £1180, and if he paid in full he could only pay 50%. Then he received a letter from buchananclark + wells threatening to add to the sum with interests and costs.
My brother has no idea what the original Halifax overdraft was. any advice?

several issues
does he actually owe the money ?
do they own the debt ?
is it in any event statute barred as no contact has been made in the last 6 years?
in this case i would suggest he takes that line that he acknowledge no debt to them and in any event such a debt would be statute barred.
if he write he should start the letter 'without prejudice'
and then 'I acknowledge no debt to you etc.
and refer to the debt as the 'alleged debt'0 -
The last letter my brother got was on 14th April 1999 from eversheds which stated that this account has been passed back to the Halifax. He hears nothing until a letter from Thames credit in November 2005 saying he owes £1000 but they will accept £500.
Should I just write to them asking for details of the orginal debt, because my brother does not have any information; he thought he'd paid it off.
Should I contact the Halifax? Does it come under the six year rule?
My situation seems similar to this thread:
