Mortgage direct debit returned unpaid... Help?

I pay my mortgage via Direct Debit but through my own stupidity I have managed to get it returned unpaid as there wasn't enough money in my account to pay it. I am absolutely kicking myself as it's not due to a lack of money, I just didn't check there was enough in the account to cover my direct debits which are all paid on the same day, and my mortgage was the one which didn't get paid. This is the first time i've done this and i'm not sure what to expect to happen now, and rather starting to panic.

I only realised when I recieved a letter from Halifax today telling me about the fee's I would have to pay for the return of the direct debit, but it doesn't mention anything about the mortgage payment itself. Can anybody tell me how I can make the payment to cover the one I have now missed? And what sort of problems am I looking at facing...Will my credit rating be trashed? And will I have a huge amount of fee's to pay (i'm guessing so!) Anything else anyone thinks I should know about?

Thanks in advance

    Call them to check.

They used to represent the dd 7 days later. If they still do you need to fund your current account.

If not, pay a cheque or cash at a branch counter.
  • Ok thanks that's really helpful. If they represent after 7 days that would have been yesterday, unless bank holidays are taken into account, and there isn't any sign of an attempted DD showing on my online banking but the account is funded either way and I will call into branch as soon as I can. Thanks again
