Quick Advice Needed re Floorboards

Hi have searched but can't seem to find the answers to my problem.
The floorboards in our house are old, possibly well on their way to their centenary, my parents had the house before us and at some time my father painted areas of them black round any rugs that they had. When I mopped up spilled paint the black came off wholesale.
Should I try cleaning the whole of the floorboards with Sugar Soap solution, Stardrops or vinegar (which would be best?) or just vacume well, find plenty of rugs and wait until I can afford a new carpet or laminate covering?
I did wonder about replacing the floorboards but have been told this is a difficult job, something to do with levels which I have to admit went over my head somewhat.

How about sanding them?
We pulled up the carpet in our bedroom, and we had the similar thing, black round the edges, and we hired a sander for 1 day, which was fairly cheap, and set to! They came up lovely, and we finished it with something like linseed oil. Its really hardwearing and very attractive.0 -

Was going to say the same:) We've sanded all the floors in our house apart from the stairs and landing and kitchen.0 -
DH has sanded all the floors except the bathroom (tiled) and the dining room (next room to be "done")...he uses a B&D hand sander & a kneeler-pad! Then we've either natural varnished (downstairs, both flights of stairs & landing) or stained with Ronseal 'Rosewood' (bedrooms & attic). The landing has a runner along it but we only have a couple of rugs otherwise.
To clean, I just vacuum, then mop over with a water / wooden floor cleaner solution.0 -
Thank you for the advice everyone will look into getting a sander in the near future.0
