Joint Mortgage - Ex is now refusing to pay half

My husband has been paying the full amount of his joint mortgage for almost 7 years as his ex girlfriend refused to pay her half! Nram pretty much refused to help full stop and said that his only option was to pay all of it every month or go into arrears etc. we went to see a solicitor last year and his ex agreed to let us put it up for sale as neither of them lived there. There was a shortfall of almost £40,000 when it finally sold and now we're left paying off the debt at £500 per month while she gets to go on expensive holidays etc even tho she's still on the mortgage. does anyone know if we can claim half off all the mortgage payments, council tax and maintance we've paid for all these years? It's so frustrating and we just can't afford it anymore with our own house, bills and young daughter0
