Is cutting my own hair a bad idea?

Options
Thing is i normally get a haircut from local barbers or one in town but i also wear hearing aids. I have recently started cutting the hair around my ears and side burns so they arent too short in order to cover the hearing aids.

The only problem is whenever i go to the barbers to get the rest cut, they sometimes end up cutting around my ear as well, like my last experience, although this guy wasnt very good with his english. I just dont want to go through the hassle of explaining to each barber about my specific haircut.

I guess i could save money and it wouldnt be too hard to cut my hair with a pair of scissors only, seeing as i only get a scissors cut anyway. Back bit would be a little tricky but i think i can manage.

Would it be a problem if my hair gets uneven? lets say i keep doing this for a year or so.

Just want to note that im a male if that makes any difference.

I would say no, don't do it! If it goes wrong you have often a regrowth period and thats no fun, if your OK with that then by all means but as you have already mentioned: making sure the back is both even and not lop sided is not easy! I once tried to cut my younger sisters hair when I was 15 and made such a bad job of it she ended up going from below the elbow hair to above the shoulder....I just couldn't get it straight. ! (She was not happy and yes I think she has forgiven me now).

What I would do was dump the barber. Chopping your skin is a big no no for all hairdressers I've seen, I have not seen the same hairdresser twice (as I get my hair done as a hair model) but only once had my skin nipped and despite the cut being so tiny it stopped bleeding almost immediatly, the salon could not apologise enough and even offered the head hairdresser take over and complete the cut they were that sorry! If your regularly getting cuts, do not return!

Have you any friends who could recommend someone else? Even better, any who are fairly good with this sort of thing and could help you cut your own hair if you do decide to go down that road?

I guess it depends on how fussy you are about how it looks. Cutting hair is not as easy as you'd think, imo. I can't even cut a fringe very well :rotfl:

Someone I used to work with got his wife to cut his hair once and .. well :o There was a nearly-bald patch on one side of his head where she'd been a bit zealous with the clippers, and a lot of uneven bits everywhere else.

By all means have a go, but bear in mind that once the hair's cut it's cut, and all you can do if you don't like the end result is wait for it to grow back. Finding a different barber might be a better option, especially as barbers are relatively cheap.

What is more important here, money saving or feeling the hearing aids are hidden?

If its the latter i would consider going to some one different to do your hair, possibly a hairdresser rather than a barber, which will be more expensive but probably more stylish.

I think cutting your own hair in a short style is a dicey option, and thats from someone who cuts their own long hair.
