Getting a pay rise

Options
OK guys, other than the usual tips you see on all those American business websites (which are solid advice, I admit, but mostly revolve around discussing with your boss a list of the things you've done to "add value" or where you've "gone the extra mile" etc), can you think of any other good ways to get a pay rise?

Anything goes... politics, backstabbing, underhand techniques, butt kissing... anything.

What can you come up with?

If you can play the Politics game then you stand a much better chance.

Sadly i cannot hence why my pay rise this year was less than 1% (but hey i suppose i should count myself lucky atleast i got one, but i don't as i did over 25% overtime).

The best way seems to be to be as difficult as possible and to make sure everything is noted down in wirting.

My Step by Step guide is as follows:
    1. Look at your job description and see how it actually compares to what you are actually doing.

    2. On a seperate paper note what you are currently doing that is NOT part of your Job Description.

    3. Assess what would happen if you stopped doing the activities you noted above in Step 2

    4. If you are the only one able to do the things noted in Step 2 then they are of benefit to you, if not then hey stop doing it, your not getting paid for it, so let the person being paid to do it do it.

    5. Have a discussion with your Boss, state the facts - what you are doing in excess of your Job description - this may assist them in putting together justification for a possible pay rise.

    6. Look for another job. Particualrly if you have been with the same employer for a number of years, sadly they will only offer you something half decent if they value you and see that your going to leave. (that said i know too many instances where they let a person leave and then have to advertise the role for someone else to fill at more money than the original employee wanted to stay).

    7. if all else fails get to know the bosses PA's, they know all the crap that goes on in any company, esspecially if they have access to thier emails etc. have found they also like to gossip

Er...get a job offer elsewhere on more money, threaten to leave and see if they'll match/better it? Always used to happen in my old job, I work in HR so I knew what went on, as often as not they'd counter offer (unless the person was really rubbish and they wanted to get rid).

The beauty of this plan is that if it fails you can go to a new, better paid job elsewhere!
