Let's face it but the Recruitment consultant asking for his managers name just implies that he/she is more interested in filling your role then finding yourself a new position.

As it has been said before, recruitment consultants are not employed to help people find jobs and they are also not careers advisers. They are employed as sales people. They are in business to service their clients needs by selling jobs.

Just like yours OP, which they are trying to do, if you do decide to leave your current position.

I doubt they would ring up and say "so-n-so has been into us and they're looking at leaving".

Agencyparanoia! Just give references when you're confirmed in the new job. Or even tease them - let them know that when they place you in a job you'll give them all the information they want.

Yes, I had read about that trick (on MSE!).
I wasn't sure why the manager question was asked but now it sort of makes sense.

What do you guys think is the best non-answer to enquiries about the manager?
Something that is an answer without being one :cool2:

just say that you will check with your manager and ask if he/she doesn't mind having their details given out, as you want to protect your manager from potential spamming!

I also say this if asked to provide someone elses email or phone number.

Whatever benefit to the agency, it's not worth letting them have your manager's contact details at their fingertips if they don't completely insist upon it. You run the risk that they will have a busy day, contact them and mistakenly mention your name.

The risk is fairly small but by mistake I once wrote to someone's manager for a reference before that person had officially handed in their notice (thankfully there was a delay in them receiving the letter!). I would never give out manager details unless I was forced to - i.e. it is a reputable agency and they insist

You're obviously a recruitment consultant! OP, whatever you do do NOT give out any names or contact details of your current employer, any interviews, or future employer!
Lol! No I am not and never have been but I do know I can walk out of one job and into another as I have good relationships and credibility with the key senior headhunters in my field - and I trust them as they trust me as being a credible candidate in my field of expertise

That is some good stuff in there 'freek.

Thanks a lot for the link man :T
  • I'm a Recruitment Consultant. The only time we will need your manager's contact details is to take a reference after you have been offered and have accepted a new role.
Some Consultants may ask for the manager's details before hand to try and make a sales call. To be honest, I would advise you don't give the details until you have been offered a position you would like to take.
