Advice needed - told P45 out of date!

in Cutting tax
Help required
I have been on maternity leave since middle of January 2006. My fixed term contract with my old employer finished on the 28th February 2006 whilst I was on maternity leave and I received SMP until July 2006.
Since then I have earned about £100 with mystery shopping companies that I am registered to pay tax with.
Next week I start a new part time job and had sent them my P45 that I received from my last proper job (which ended in Feb 2006). They have sent it back saying that they can't use it because its out of date.
Is this because I am registered to pay tax through the mystery shopping companies? I have not earned above my tax free allowance so have not paid any tax yet with them.
I am filling in my P46 and have ticked option B - this is my only job but since last 6th of April I have had another job as I could not say that option A of it being my first job since april 2006 was true even though I have earned so little from it.
Now I'm worried because last time I did a p46 it took ages to sort everything out and I was taxed heavily on an emergency tax code for ages. I'm broke because due to prem arrival of baby and illness I have been off work for fourteen months now. Have to pay bills and childcare off wages and worried it won't cover it after tax.
How long will it take to sort it out and can I rely on my new employer who are a major company to sort it out?

As you are filling in a P46 you will be put on tax code 503L week 1, which basically means you are on the same tax code as most people but on a week one basis. The P46 will get sent to to the tax office and they will then change your tax code to a cumulative 503L code, or 522L if it's after this tax year. You will not be paying too much tax. HTH.Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)0
