Not being treated right in work

Hi
Wonder if someone can help.. i doubt it but worth a try.
Here's the Situation..
I have worked for the last 2 years doing a particular role..learnt it from scratch really and now feel i am being under paid by not hundreds but thousands.
I work for a company that resourses staff out to different accounts as it happens I have stayed on the same account since I have worked. I used to work for the account but then got transferred to another company and then put back with the existing account..hope that makes sense.
Anyway i work in a team of 5 and we are based all over the place.
2 people in Place A
2 in people in Place B
Just me in Place C
We used to be a team of 11 a year ago but then people took redunduncy. Well when i was told 2 years ago i would need to learn something new i didnt have a clue i was always asking asking my trainer and needed assistance from my trainer. Well then my trainer took redunduncy and then i was left to work on my own.. well in the last 6 months I have learnt loads and loads been put in awkward postions but always completed the work and got brill results.
The kind of work i do can be done by any member of the team even when based in Place A or B and like me based in Place C i can still do work for place A and B. You just do it remotely.
Well its come to the stage now where I have learnt so much i'm starting sort other members of my teams problems out. Even though we all work on the same system and they have more experience then me i'm the one rectifying there problems coz they've screwed something up.
Ive pulled stats off and me working on my own have completed more work then any other site with even two people working on a site.
I have my appraisel this week and just want something done about it as dont see why I should be paid the least but doing the most work. Apparently its easier to get blood out of a stone then get a pay rise.
Knowing what other people in the team are on makes me feel even more annoyed.
The rate I get paid i think i should be doing a lot les technical work but i'm doing the same programming as other members, i'm even correcting there work!
Is there a site about maybe where you can get a market rate for the type of role you do in they type of area you live??
I have heard some figures and put my pay in the scale and i'm not even on 80% of the market rate!!
Its bringing me down all this and every meeting we have (3 times a week) all i seem to be doing is moaning and moaning and thats not like me. If i was paid correctly i wouldnt moan coz i know I would be paid to take all the stress on that I do.
I dont think i get the respect that i deserve.. as i'm only 23 they seem to treat me like a kid who hasnt got a clue. For example we had a problem with a system and i'm pretty clued up on it and when i mentioned the fix in a conference meeting the problem manager just wouldnt accept my fix and asked someone esle in Place B, week later they treid my fix.. well what happened.. it worked. i was fuming as no one listened to me. If someone mentioned the fix I mentioned from Place A or B then they would have done it but coz it was me they didnt!!!
Sorry bou blabbing on but need to get this frustration out of my system..even joined the union today but then cancelled it as thought i can fight my own battles in my appraisel and if i dont get what i deserve i'll hand my notice in and then they will be screwed as most my work noone esle knows the setup of Place C like I do. Trouble is i got no qualifications. i just got experience so if i dont get another job lined up i'm jobless.. got wedding next year aswell!
Arghhhhhhh so annoyed with it all!!!!

First of all you need to be a member of the Union - not necessarily for the job you are in now but for a job down the line.
I learned the hard way that the Union is worth every penny.
The only thing I can say about your work is that it may be time for you to move on to pastures new.
If you stay where you are it would seem that you will never achieve the respect that you deserve.
Look for another job and start as you mean to go on.
Good luck!0 -
I love the actually place where i work as I know everyone but the company i work for..who are based somewhere else and my team are scattered everywhere i dont get the respect.
Ive printed stuff out for my appraisiel and it shows all the figures in it..
ie; total problems sent to our team = 221
Total problems resolved by me alone = 175
So the other 4 members have sorted 46 between them!
I even sell 6 holidays a year to push my wage up and still thousands off the next member above me. I cancel holidays to help business out and work around them as love the satisfaction over getting a result an sorting problems out.
Say a problem comes in..our service level agreement is sort in 20 days for a basic problem. I would sort it that day.. other members wouldnt worry..they would sit on it for another 10 days then look at it. I just think if it can be done then do it and forget about it and not sit on it for days on end.
I sometimes think I have OCD in work.. everythings got to be done straight away if possible. why sit on something when you can sort it and move onto the next thing!!0 -
Firstly congratulations on teaching yourself to do your job.
Before going in to your Appraisal can I give you a word of advice, do not go in with guns blazing. You need to show to your Manager the advances you have made, you've already done some homework on this by showing the problem solving you have actioned. The key thing is not to keep comparing yourself to others in your team but to show to your Manager that you are now a valuable member of his/her team.
As for getting a comparison of your rate of pay, have a look at locally advertised similar positions.
Make your Appraisal meeting constructive not destructive. Show your Manager that you have progressed in difficult circumstances, that you are reliable and willing to train to further advance your career.
If all this fails then at least you will have given it your best shot and maybe it is time to consider moving on.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.Happy riding on two or three"We're not complete idiots, we do have some parts missing!" :doh:0 -
Very wise words there..thanks.
Normally when i have an appraisel it done like we are mates an i just accept everything they say and just go in there with a few written down notes.
This time around ive actually printed out graphs and stats and typing everything up.
I'm gonna let him start and not mention anything about pay.He souldnt have anything thing negative to say. once he's finished his part an said iv worked to the best of the ability then i'll talk about pay.. that way he can't really change his appraisel as he's already told me everything..
just finishing writting it all up today and then looking forward to what he's got to say.
If anyone can think of anything else i could think of adding or saying then please let me know..
Thanks all0 -
Firstly... may fav topic of unions seeing as someone else brought them up.... if you work for a company that has unions the join it... they never give a stuff about the employees at the same company that arent part of the union. Your better option is to go to a company without unions as they do nothing but serve their own purposes and will happily sell people off up the river.
To the OP.... to be honest it does sound as if you need to realise how employment works. Arguably I am in a very similar situation.... in my department we have 4 seniors (inc myself) and each of us have up to 5 managers reporting into us. The salaries for seniors range from £50,000 to £120,000 exc bonuses and yet we all do the identical job (can you guess where I am in the range?)
When you start a job a company will offer to pay you what they think they need to to get you to take the job... ie as little as possible. The salary is not directly based on how good you are, how well you interview or how much experience you have but these play a part in working out how much you are going to be willing to move for.
Once you are in a job do not expect annual pay rises to level the playing field of salaries. The way to get a decent pay rise is to switch jobs as they have to pay you more to get you to take their job offer. To get the best pay rise you would normally have to change companies as well as jobs because for internal applicants the recruiting manager will most likely know your salary where as an external company can only guess.
So... why I am I paid less? At the time of getting the job I only had 2 years experience where as most my colleagues have 10+ years. I am only 28 where the average age of the rest of my colleagues is 41. They all have post graduate qualifications like MBAs and accountancy qualifications, I dont even have an honors degree. Quite simply, they knew that no one else was going to offer me such a senior position, they therefore had no competition and so could offer me a very low salary for the job and be fairly sure I would take it.
When I look internally I have to put my salary down and on a recent job offer I was offered 30% more which generally would be a good percentage pay rise for a sideways step. At the same time I have been looking externally and when asked about salary I say I am market rate and people have asked that I consider roles paying £80-120k because their wrong assumption of what my current pay is and therefore how much they have to pay to tempt me away. All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers

Well had an appraisal and was in there 4 hours!!!!!
They mark you on 1 to 4.. for being the lowest. I had a two for pretty much of it and was told no one gets a 1.. he said think 1 person has got a 1 in the 16 years working for the company. still no payrise though..0 -
Did you feel the appraisal was fair?
Astoroth is right, by the way.0 -

I can assure you, with hand on heart, i have never, and will never serve anyone but my members and ensure their best interests are given cognisance. If you've had a bad experience, I'm sorry to hear that, however don't let that set your opinion of all trade unions and stewards. There is never a week goes by that i have serious situations to deal with and i will ensure that the members are at the forefront of any decision or outcome. Our union is member led and within reason and rule i am happy to take instruction from them - as you may imagine, this leads to a turbulent relationship with management. Sorry but "happily sell people off up the river"....no. If i did, I'd never be re-elected by the rank and file nor would i have it on my conscience.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
A good appraisal outcome provides some independent (of the OP) validation of the OP's opinion that the OP should be paid more for this level of performance. With very few exceptions, Companies rarely give large payrises to people for doing the same job no matter how much it is deserved. Putting this together with the result of no pay rise despite a good appraisal, my opinion is that it is time for the OP to look for another job (but leave on good terms).0

Its hard to leave a place when all you got is experience.. ive learnt everything off other people or in-house. Got no certificates...
I just feel why should I be pushed out becasue they wont even pay me 80% of the mark rate for the role.. I'm an Information system developer programming aspect and ICM on £19,900 a year.. other members of the team or keep screwing up who have been there a year or two longer then me and a 2-3 years older then me are on £23k minimum!!0
