Land registry and BR

Hi all, don't know if anyones come across this before (I've trawled the boards and seen no mention) but any advice would be gratefully accepted!
Sadly, my Nanna recently passed away. During the checks that solicitors apparently have to do, he found out that I was BR and informed my parents (who at the time were unaware). At this point I had been discharged for over 6 months, but the land registry (the source of his info) hadn't registered me as such!
Firstly, does anyone know how the land registry got involved and what they have to do with bankruptcy?! I don't own any property or land, and I thought that's what their business was! Seems to me the IS would be a better place to source such info!
Secondly, who has access to the land registry? Is it worth me trying to update them or is it rarely used?
Thirdly, who are they and how do I update them? I've read that to update them I will need to pay a fee, but can't find any info on how much or how to pay!
It also came up with my cousins name, who was BR many years ago, but they only had his name partially correct! It cost a load in sollicitors fees to sort the whole mess out!
If anyone has any experience with this, I'd be glad to hear it!! x

Hi,
I can't see how you would be on the land registry if you don't have an interest in any property or land.
Are you sure the information didnt come from the London Gazette?

No they showed my dad a notice from the land registry - was an uncomfortable conversation to say the least since they didn't know! I thought the same thing so I asked him to get a copy and it's definitely from them.0

The OR lodges a WOB notice (writ order bankruptcy) with the land charges department of the land registry, the notice does not update, it is not a current active thing like your credit rating, it is simply a notice of fact and will stay there for 6 years from the bankruptcy order, The land charges department will attch from this a notice to any actual property that you have or may come into, it is a notice to warn solicitors so that they may make further checks such as seeing if you are yet dischargedHi, im Debtinfo, i am an ex insolvency examiner and over the years have personally dealt with thousands of bankruptcy cases.

Yes this happened to me, a solicitor did checks and showed me as bankrupt even though I too was discharged. I too was unaware that the ORs went down this route and think i should be explained to you when you go BR as it caused me a lot of embarassment as somebody I would not normally have told about my circumstances found out!0

Hello, you might find this explanation from Land Registry useful:
In addition to the registration of title for England & Wales, Land Registry also has responsibility for the functions of the Land Charges Department. The Land Charges Department maintains registers of land charges, pending actions, and other matters registered against named individuals which cannot be registered against specific properties.
When a bankruptcy petition is presented to the court, the Court Service notifies the Land Charges Department. If a bankruptcy order is subsequently made making the debtor bankrupt, the order is registered on the Land Charges Register.
We would suggest you refer to our Public Guide 10 - Bankruptcy Petitions and Public Guide 11 - Bankruptcy Orders both of which are available on our website.
These guides explain what official registers are involved, how the entries are made and how the entries can be removed.

Totally agree Poodle, a bit of warning might have been nice! I never intended to tell my parents, but tbh I'm glad they found out. They were very supportive and even said they thought I'd done the right thing!
Thanks for looking after us Fermi
