Cutting my own hair???

Hi
Does anyone know of any gadgets that would help me to cut my own hair?

I've been struggling for a couple of years using two mirrors, but find it increasingly difficult to do. I have naturally curly hair and need it to be layered otherwise it sticks out everywhere. The top and front are no problem, but the back is a real mess. I don't want it long, but find keeping it short and tidy really difficult.

I've been looking at the special barbers' cutters for sale on line, but they would all cut it too short for me.

Are there any gadgets out there that would work??

Hope someone can help!! (And no, I don't want to get discounts from local hairdressers!)

    Hi Liliant,

    This thread may help:

Cutting your own hair, tips please?

Or have a look on the Health, Beauty & Fashion MoneySaving, board where there are quite a few threads on cutting hair.

I'll move your thread over there once you've had some input from the Old Stylers.

It is possible to do more with clippers than just shaved short.

My hair's madly curly - very forgiving if it ends up a variety of lengths.:D I cut it with clippers - do the back and the sides with the longest guard, lifting in as I o up the back to get a gradiated effect. Then the top by lifting my hair, section by section in between my fingers and running the unguarded clippers along the top of my fingers. If I want to thin it out I cut downwards against my scalp with scissors. I don't think I could do any other styles, even this one is very hit and miss depending on how patient a mood I'm in.

no real advice - just do NOT buy one of those 'gadgets' that look like miniature hedge cutters! the one advertised in mags and those 'gadget' mags - its just a razor blade in disguise and will take out great 'chunks' of hair!

a really good way of saving money is to find out if the local college do hairdressing courses - they often have 'salon days' where students cut hair, do perms and colours etc for a fraction of the salon price!
they even sometimes need 'models' (or victims as they were cruelly called in our local college) and these usually get done free!
Home hairdressing services are usually much cheaper than salons too - and the owners are usually very well qualified. find these in the telephone directory or they often advertise on cards in local shops.

I have very long hair and use the "ponytail" technique - a google search should give you some ideas.
