To request permission for a second job now or wait? advice needed.

The thing is there is a few flexible jobs going atm like one in the pub near me some agency care work flexible home care company.

However I was going to wait until 31/10/2012, as this is when I would of been in employment for one year (the rule is still one year for me). I have only been there 6 month at present.

Taking a second job now would boost my savings significantly. I would not let my normal job suffer and would always give them priority(which i will be making clear in my permission request letter).

The only thing I am worried about, is although i get on with my manager it is HR who deal with these requests. What if they think I am being ungrateful/ unsatisfied with my current income and get moody and decide to dismiss me from getting annoyed.

What do you guys think

Does your contract / terms of employment mention anything about taking on a second job?

usually a second job should be fine assuming it is not closely linked to your current job or is a competitor of your current employer. For example if you worked for Topshop and you wanted a second job in Oasis, this wouldn't be appropriate. But if you worked in Topshop and wanted a second job in a pub then it should be fine.

There is no reason why your current employer should think you are unsatisfied or ungrateful. A lot of people take two jobs. Are you part time in your current job? Don't worry about waiting a year either. That's being a little too paranoid!

If you are part time might be best to ask if they have any more hours first then if not inform them you'd like to take a second job in the pub/care home and that you would continue to ensure they are your first priority etc.

I think you are being overly paranoid, as another poster mentioned. Having a second job in your sort of role isn't that unusual at all - they should treat your request professionally and not allow "being annoyed" to taint their judgement. All they really care about is that it won't impact you in your current role with them (you being too tired to perform your duties, or if it was in a competitor's company ... etc). Other than that, it's not really their concern, or shouldn't be.:)

Excellent - even if they turn you down, I don't think you can do anything more than this.

I worked on a computer help desk (Mon-Fri) and was asked by an old boss if I would help out on the occasional Saturday or Sunday covering work in an estate agents. My HR department had no problem with this.

Be bold - just ask politely - you never know, they might say yes.....

Only you can decide that. This really doesn't add anything further from your prior thread a few weeks ago.

If you get on with your line manager/boss then ask them how open they are to it (or ask another employee if you are friendly with anyone).
