Old Morgage Late Payment Fees Reclaim

Hi, hope someone can help me with this one please. I had a mortgage with the Halifax 3 years ago and when i left them they took well over £3000 pound off me in late payment fees which had grown over 7 years. Since i have heard that everybody is claiming fees back i was wondering do you think i would be able to claim them back even though i no longer have a morgage with them? All i know about that last mortgage is an account number, would they be able to find a closed account with that information alone? Any help would be much appreciated as totally perplexed by all the jargon on this site.... thankyou
