Why do agencies do this?

London is a big place to know every single company! When put like that it is very difficult, but sometimes you can read between the lines, i.e they will give clues as to the type of employer that is recruiting for that role. If you know your local area well you should have some idea who is and isn't recruiting.
The one on the Reed website advertised by the agency actually named the county council it was recruiting for.

Most times you have no idea who the company are as they say something like
'A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join a fast paced, international publishing company as an Accounts Payable Supervisor. Working within the Finance Team, this new role offers real opportunities to work within an exciting team in a dynamic company. '
How are you meant to know who they are from that? You can't!
This is exactly the reason why I don't like agencies. I find them very evasive and a bit !!!!!!!!-ish. When I apply for a job I want to know at least who the prospective employer is and I want to be able to do a little research on them.0 -
I have said it on here time and time again yet people do not believe me that the agencies do not tell you who the company is till you have the interview. They get all the info on you and decide if they want to see you but you can not decide to go or not to the interview as its too late by the time you know who they are. This is exactly the reason why I don't like agencies. I'm not sure what you are trying to say here, but they do tend to make a point of initially not telling you where the vacancy is. If they persisted in this with me I always tried to get as much info out of them as to at least know what sort of company you might be working for. I always asked
1) What sort of industry you are likely to be working in. i.e,engineering, car factory, food factory etc. Also If you are vegetarian you might not want to work in a chicken factory. Most of them would at least give me me this info
2) Also the post code of where the job is as I said I might be reliant on public transport.
If I literally had no idea of where the vacancy was, I would not allow my CV to be submitted. That was my choice as I needed to know where my CV was going to be sent
On the other hand if you don't mind them sending off your CV blind and you don't know what the job is or who you are working for, you can always turn the interview down. If they get arsy then it's their fault for not telling you initially where the job is.0 -

We know why they do this, it's because thay are scared out of their t**s, that you might approach the company directly yourself.
This can be completely counter productive as for whatever reasons you might not want to work for that company. It can be a waste of both yours and their time
As mentioned in my previous post I would always try and get any info off them to at least know what industry the role is in.If they wouldn't give me this then I would refuse my cv to be submitted0 -

That's happened before where they wouldn't show me a job spec just a didn't tell me the location or salary and it was less than I was on at the time so turned that down and they were not pleased. Or another time when I was working I went to an agency to get a new job. He showed me 3 job specs which I took away and then said I was interested in two but one I had no interest in as it was further away (but more money) & could they put me forward for the other two. A few days later I got a call from the agency to say could I do them a favour and go to an interview at the company I was not interested in! I said to them I had told you not to put me forward for that one and then he confessed to already showing them my CV and talking about me before he had meet me and even showed me the job spec. I said that I would not take the job even if offered it so I would not just go to waste their time as it wasn't fair on the company.
Safe to say I never heard from that agency again.0
