My husband placed a car battery on my black marble work tops which now has turned white. Anyone got any solutions? I have my house for sale and need to get this sorted ASAP. Thank you

If the stains are from battery acid nothing other than re polishing or re honing will remove them.0

What a shame! I do feel bad for you.
Perhaps a strategically placed new wooden chopping board is required until you get this sorted out with professional help.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -
Got a similar, but not so noticeable, problem with a marble fireplace that has a shelf on which glasses of fruit juice have been placed from time to time.
The marble isn't stained but, when light reflects on it, you can see the rings where the polish has been eaten away. Have tried several proprietary cleaners and polishes for marble, but none have had any effect.0 -

This stuff isn't cheap but may help http://www.mbstonecare.co.uk/powders/mb11-mb-stone-care-mb-11-marble-polishing-powder-6-oz.html0

Good luck trying to get any local company to respond to an email. I emailed 3 or 4 a few months back to ask if they could fix a similar (less serious!) problem and not a single one of them ever replied.

The problem is that battery acid is well, acid and marble is alkali so you mix the two and you get a permanent chemical reaction. Unfortunately that means it is not a stain to remove, that is just what it now looks like. If you are lucky, it will not have reacted too deeply in which case it can be polished away. If it has sat there too long, it may simply be permanent short of something really major.Always overestimating...0

Strictly speaking, marble is a base as it is not soluble in water.
Sorry, teaching it to the 14 year olds today. Couldn't resist!
You're right though. Conc. sulphuric acid + calcium carbonate (and its basic pals) = no chance of removing stain.Stercus accidit0
