Aviva CU Homemaker Mixed Performance

Have a strange one that I would be interested in feedback on if possible. I have two with profit endowments that were CU Homemaker, now Aviva.
Performance for two is very different:
started matures target projected MEP
1995 2013 £63,000 £44,000 £950
1998 2014 £75,000 £65,000 £9,800
The later endowment performance even without MEP is much better than the 1995 endowment. 31% short versus 13% short (MEP saved the day!).
ALSO - with about 13 months left, the 1995 statement gives a surrender value of £45,000 versus a projection of £43,000 (6%) plus £950 MEP. Can I get £45,000 now from Aviva if I surrender and save £2300 further payments?? Is there any hidden loss (bonus) I am missing?
Just curious as to why such a difference in investment performance.
Thanks
