Yep, without aerial or cable reception, you're left with satellite.
    That's a Sky subscrition,
freesatfromsky which is Sky without a subscription (no recording)
    FreeSat (HD, recording available)
free satellite (the kind of box you get from Lidl with a dish)
All of the above will plug into the same dish, pointing in the same direction.
WillyK - you're getting freesatfromsky NOT FREEVIEW. There's an important difference. Freeview only comes through aerials. The Freesatfromsky card is exactly the same as an expired subscriber card (and gives nothing extra) - including regionalisation like you have on one of your cards.

    Found this:

Freesat from Sky gives you access to a great choice of over 240 quality digital TV channels, including terrestrial channels like BBC1, ITV and More4 and Pick TV – that’s four times more than Freeview TV. And with channels ranging from entertainment to sport and music, including shows like Cold Case and Road Wars, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

You can also view up to six free to air high definition channels if you have an HD ready TV and a SkyHD box - BBC HD, BBC One HD, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD, Channel 5 HD and Luxury Life HD.

So I guess you do get more with the freesat card.
  • With the 'Freesat from Sky' deal you won't be able to digitally record your programmes onto HDD (assuming you have a suitable box) unless you pay Sky about a tenner a month to activate the recording facility. Not so good unless you like to watch everything 'live off air' or you are prepared to do a lot of fiddling with a separate HDD recorder box - or of course you are happy to pay Sky £120 quid a year for the privilege of recording shows on your own equipment.

With a proper Freesat box with HDD recording capability, no problem, no charges.

Sky are basically muddying the waters with their 'Freesat from Sky' offer in an attempt to get their kit into peoples' homes in preference to more functional dedicated Freesat hardware.

They are just continuing their strategy of getting a lock on digital satellite TV encoding which allows them to control the PayTV market in the UK and Ireland.

Willyk - repeat after me - Freeview is received through an aerial.
A 'freesat card' is a 'freesatfromsky' card, and gets you exactly the same service as a Sky subscriber card that has been cancelled. That's more than a Sky box without a card in it (referred to as Free to View). That's what you're receiving. If you were to put Sky cards into those boxes, you'd get SOME more (the 'Free to Air channels - they're free, but encrypted, and need the card for decryption and viewing), but not FOUR TIMES - that number refers to how many channels are on Freeview, the TERRESTRIAL (aerial) TV service.

"Freeview is received through an aerial"

has been repeated. I think at this stage I will bow out of the conversation. Thanks for the info.

RTE will I think have a restricted broadcast on Freeview for NI similar to what Sky carries at present due to Good Friday Agreement etc.... We are in the lucky position of having an RTE transmitter right next to us and so will get full Saorview providing we have an MPEG 4 TV or box:T

For old analogue TV I had 2 Aerials, one for BBC and one for RTE, the signal is now so good from the RTE transmitter that my BBC high gain aerial will pick up Saorview brilliantly:T

You can buy a freeview HD box that has an RF output, I'm guessing that you send an RF output from your existing skybox throughout the house to get it on all 3 TV's. The freeview box should work exactly the same if it has an RF output as well as an input from the aerial. Tesco's own brand Technika have 2 freeview HD box's one for £40 and one for £50. Have a look at either in the store and make sure either has an RF output and your sorted.

Remember come October the RTE and BBC transmitter will only broadcast Saorview / Freeview and the signal strength on both will be boosted. A cheap indoor set top aerial should pick up both perfectly:T I have picked up Saorview perfectly in Altnagelvin Hospital with a coat hanger:)

Well, part of the reason NTL couldn't offer RTE on their cable service for so long was Coronation Street!..UTV objected to RTE on cable on the basis of advertising in that as,at the time,Corrie started earlier on RTE than UTV,people would watch that one & see adverts for Paddy's Place in Dublin for example & not see the one for Paddy's Place in Belfast...

Unlike now, when we have to put up with endless ads for the sodding Strawberry Alarm Clock...
