Pans, how many do you need?

Going to have a new kitchen fitted soon and need to get rid of some stuff. Most of which will be going to stepdaughter who is looking to buy a house with boyfriend.

Having an induction hob so will need new pans.

I try to be old style and cook from scratch but do not make jam etc.

Looking in my over flowing pan cupboard, I have 1 normal frying pan, 1 wok type frying pan, 1 large wok type frying pan with a lid. 1 2 tier steamer pan and 1 small / milk pan, 1 medium pan and 1 large.

Getting a Bosch induction hob and see that they do some pans which have handles on side, so guess they can go in oven too, which might cut down on casserole dishes?

We are a family of 4 and I make a pan of soup a week and a roast every weekend.

Do use slowcooker a couple of times a week, less in summer.

Don't want to over clutter new kitchen

Good question - I need to start sorting ours out too.

I have 3 hand-me-down cruset of various sizes, a milk pan, a wok, 4 metal pans of varying sizes, 1 large frying pan and 2 small pancake-size pans. There are only 2 of us, so that's quite a lot!

I would look at the pans you have and try and remember how often you use them

If say you use a pan every day or several times a week then you are going to need a similar, if on the other hand you have some that have been lurking at the back of the cupboard and not been used in a year then chances are you can manage without them.

The pans with side handles which can go in the oven are great as you can start a casserole off on the hob and transfer to the oven without having to change dishes.

You never have enough pans! I have 2 cupboards full of pans. I dream of having those lovely pans that you can display on a pan hanger instead of the bashed, burnt and warped old favourites i do have. my omelet pan has not been washed for 20 years (only wiped with kitchen paper), makes fantastic omelets and pancakes, but is now almost oval. Sorry didn't answer the question. LOL

I love our induction hob :D I would follow the following method - either put all your pans in a cardboard box / empty cupboard (or put a sticky label on each if pushed for space). Over the next month every time you use a pan for the first time put it back where you keep your pans. Then you will know which pans you need to replace.
Keep meaning to use this method for finding out what clothes I actually wear, though obviously would need to be over more than a month.

One tip for this that I remember reading on a Flylady email is putting coat hangers back to front in the wardrobe. After you have worn it (and washed it) put the hanger back the normal way. You soon find out what you don't wear.

1 small, 1 large frying pan. 1 small, 1 large wok. 1 HUGE pan to make chilli etc which is only really used if I'm cooking for parties. 2 less huge but still huge stock pot type pans. Set of saucepans (3) and 2 saucepans left over from previous sets.

  • We seem to live in a sea of pans at home. Some I have never ever used. I only really use the slow cooker, large and medium pans, small and large frying pans and my oven. We also seem to have a sea of pyrex!!!! I mean how many pyrex do you need in your life!!!
Has anyone seen my last marble:A:A:A:A
