Interest charged on overpayment of benifit

I was charged a huge amount of interest £8,000 on a housing benefit overpayment of about £300 its a complex story of which is too long to go in to detail whilst i dont dispute the overpayment were the council right to have charged that amount of interest it worked out something like £3 a day going back 5 yrs and just mounted up i didnt recieve lots of letters from them informing me of the overpayment and i didnt get the £300 in my hand as it would have gone from the council benefits office straight to the council whom i rented from and there was only a couple of court procceedings can i do anything x
