Gift Aid & R40

I am completing a R40 form for the first time as I realise I'm due a refund of about £300.

I can't remember which charity donations I gift aided or didn't. I know there was a £20 donation for the year in question, but have no record of it other than the card bill. There will have been the odd £5 or £10 here and there too I might or might not have give aided.

Does it matter if I omit these entries altogether as I don't know details? BTW I am nowhere near higher rate tax :rotfl:.

Thanks

Only applies for those on higher rate tax as they can reclaim the difference between 40/50% and the basic rate of 20%
Just out of interest why are you getting a refund? I am assuming that you have paid sufficient tax in order for the charity to reclaim the tax you have paid?

On the R40 I think it's more to do with checking that, following the claim, you've still paid enough tax to underpin the amount Gift Aided. I would simply enter the amount you know you Gift Aided.

OK thanks. Will HMRC have a record of any gift aid donations I did make and if so use that to check that I did pay enough tax? I know that far more tax was being deducted than the small amounts that charities could reclaim. I had previously just completed one of these online 'Can I get my interest gross' forms and it had said no. But looking properly for 2010/11 it looks like tax was over deducted by a few hundred quid.

Yep definitely enough. I wonder if I can check with the charity concerned when their office opens again on Monday - this donation was January 2011 - to be sure I did gift aid it as I'm not dead certain.

I'm sure you can - and if you didn't 'gift aid' it at the time - you can still make a gift aid declaration for recent past donations, which I'm sure any charity would appreciate!

EDIT: I should have said that the charity will know if you have already made a gift aid declaration as they will have your name and address. If you haven't done so previously, you can do so retrospectively as I said, but they would presumably have to be able to identify any donations you have made in the past before they could recover the gift aid relating to them.
