Hi - thanks in advance to all you mortgage advisors and those in the know that give free advice on these forums.
OH and I are going for mortgage next month. I'm trying to sort out all potential problems before we do. The major one I can think of is my boyf is not on electoral roll. He has been at his rented place for 2 years and before that at his dad's. He's never bothered to return the form! He's not sure if he's still on it at his dad's address. Also, he still has bank statements going to his dad's address and I think his credit card is registered to his dad's address, although he doesn't use it so doesn't have statements. Of course all his utility bills and council tax is in his present address.
Will the fact that he is not on the electoral roll effect our chances of getting a mortgage? Should we get him on there asap? I think the earliest he can appear on there will be the 2nd april. Is this too late if we want to seek mortgage advice at end of march?
Will him having a different address on his bank statements cause problems?

Hi.
Does he have any correspondence going to his current address?
It may not be the end of the world if he is not registered on the Electoral Role. Many lenders would then just ask for confirmation of his address instead.
Does he have a full driving license and if so, did he get that changed to the current address.
If so, he should be fine, but other recent utility bills in his name could suffice.
Credit scoring works a bit like GCSE's where the more you duplicate things, the more points you get, so having 2 landlines (work and home), having previous credit history, being on voters role, tend to give extra points, but it may be fine with one or two of the above missing.I am a Mortgage Adviser

Knowing him he probably hasn't changed the address on his driving licence.
He has 2 years, 6 months utilities etc at his present address, but all bank statements and prob driving licence show his old address and is not on electoral roll.
Would trying to quickly get him on the register and change his driving licence and bank statements over help at all? We are looking to go for advice and AIP in about a month, so would these changes help, or not really?0 -
Changing al his document to the correct address will indeed improve the situation
BTW you can get a fine for not having the correct address on your driving licence

But Martin says if you're not on the electoral role you're unlikely to get credit of any kind. Doesn't this mean he'll juts have a really low credit score and lenders won't touch us, or will they look at why and if it's just the electoral roll issue, ask for proof of address?0

Not being on the electoral role does not mean an immidiate no. It just means that not every lender will take you on and also that you might therefore not get the best deals out there.
He would need to prove his address where he lives and it would be in his interest to get his licence sorted asap and also to get his bank statements to his address where he lives. It also would be good to get him on the electoral role at least now for the future.0
