Its common practice, in companies in the states, but as with most things there are products and techniques that you can use to evade that positive result and dismissal.
A colleague of mine in the US office has annual tests yet smokes more weed than cheech & Chong.

I wouldn't mind the test as i know i'd sail through it, but what about being in the same room as someone smoking weed and inhaling it through passive smoking surely it would show up in a test!!

The only problem i have with this is that working life is dictating how you live you private life. I don't take drugs or drink but there are some precribed drugs that could appear on the drugs test, so how would that be dealt with.
When you have one of these tests they ask you all those questions like what are you currently taking from the doctor, over the counter and even simple things like have you eaten mints in the last 2 hours as these too show up in a test.
I once worked for Balfour Beatty and had to have both tests as all staff did. You were not allowed to drink in a working day nor were you even allowed to buy wine or something at lunch to take home that night as no booze was allowed in the office.

Poppy seed cake. Avoid poppyseed cake.

And poppy seed bagels too apparently - I've heard of people getting into trouble when they've eaten those.

I have been a regular customer with Amazon for years and am really shocked to find that they give prospective employees urine and breatherliser tests; I wonder if they do this to their staff routinely as well. I'm surprised this is legal and I'm a bit unhappy about continuing to shop with them. I'm also rather concerned that if this is ok legally that it might become more normal.

I've also been a regular customer of Amazon for years, and have always found their service to be very efficient. Possibly because their employees aren't p!ssed, high, or hungover. Long may this continue!
