Job re-advertised after interviewing

Hi everyone,
I interviewed for a position last week and (I thought) it went very well. I had good feedback after the interview and although I didn't get the job they said I was second in the scoring. Later I also found out that they had requested a reference. SO a little disappointed I at least took away the positives that maybe I was the back-up option and they thought that I was suitable....just not as much as another.
Anyway, today I see that the job has been re-advertised and previous candidates will not be reconsidered. My first thought is that I was actually 'second' in a very bad bunch, and not actually suitable for the job at all? (Or no one was, they just told me I was 'second') But then I have to wonder why they would have bothered asking for a reference? Did the reference let me down? I doubt it. Does anyone have any thoughts?
Like I say, I took away a lot of positives, but now I don't really know what to think.
Cheers,

You'll never uncover the truth here unfortunately.
But do take the positives as positives - you were complimented on doing well.
If they are talking in truth it's likely you were second in line, the first person changed their mind - and they want someone the same as that first person. This could be down to experience, interview style or just fit within a team.
Keep up the good work!0 -
Did you apply directly or via an agency?
Are you 1000% certain it is the same role? You can find people with identical job specifications working in lots of different departments.
It could be its been advertised by mistake, it could be a similar role in a different department, could be inefficiencies in HR or it could be you werent that great.
If you went via an agency I would certainly be straight on the phone to the agency to do some digging. If it was direct then its a bit more tricky but I wouldnt rule out responding back to the person that gave you the positive feedback0
