Can I take it at 50?

I recently suffered heart problems and had a pacemaker fitted. I am unable to do my normal job now, this was climbing over big expensive toys for a number of years. Although I enjoyed it, it is now a complete show stopper.

I have 4 pensions. One preserved until I am 60 (services). Two final salary and the scheme I am in now. I am just after a bit of general advice, but at present it is unlikely that I will be doing my old job again. How do I go about the next step. Doctor has referred me back to cardiology and neurology.

Highly unlikely that you will be able to take them at 50 under normal rules. You will need to take ill health retirement which will need specialist opinion from the doctors and be passed on to the pension trustees. You need to read up on the scheme rules for the various pensions.

    For instance
There are no provisions in AFPS 75 to pay preserved pensions early except on grounds of ill-health. A preserved pension (and index-linked pension increases) may be awarded early at the discretion of the Scheme administrators if you become permanently unable to undertake any full time work through ill-health. You will need to apply to SPVA Pensions Division for this and you will be asked to provide documentary evidence of your ill-health. You will also need to agree that SPVA Pensions Division can contact your doctor and/or consultant.

Normally you won't be able to take a pension at age 50 unless the scheme specifically allowed it after the change to age 55. Few do but there are some exceptions.

Your only other option may be retirement through ill health if any allow for that.

You may not be able to do your old job, but that doesn't mean that after the pacemaker you won't be fit to do another sort of job. So on the present information I would think it unlikely, but that is for you and your doctors (and the govt if you clam disability)to decide.
  • OK, thanks. I will check with the union and the schemes.
